  1. In 1505 the first Portuguese post was established on the trade
  2. route to the east.  On June 25, 1975, Mozambique became
  3. independent after a ten year war with the Portuguese.  The
  4. revolution paved the way to a smooth transferal of power to the
  5. Frelimo (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique).  Frelimo
  6. repressed the opposition, and became violent against both black
  7. and white inhabitants.  The government, lead by Samora Machel
  8. created a gradual transition towards a communist system, closing
  9. private schools, organizing collective farms and nationalizing
  10. private businesses.  Most of the countries 160,000 whites left
  11. and the country has become economically dependent on South
  12. Africa.  In the 1980s severe drought caused famine and heavy
  13. loss of life.                         @
