In 1505 the first Portuguese post was established on the trade
route to the east. On June 25, 1975, Mozambique became
independent after a ten year war with the Portuguese. The
revolution paved the way to a smooth transferal of power to the
Frelimo (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique). Frelimo
repressed the opposition, and became violent against both black
and white inhabitants. The government, lead by Samora Machel
created a gradual transition towards a communist system, closing
private schools, organizing collective farms and nationalizing
private businesses. Most of the countries 160,000 whites left
and the country has become economically dependent on South
Africa. In the 1980s severe drought caused famine and heavy
loss of life. @
